Focus Cosmetic Ingredient: Hemp Oil

Nature is so rich that every day we come across cosmetic ingredients that are not or not very well known. Today, we introduce you to hemp oil with the help of the Chanvria brand, which specialized in organic cosmetics based on hemp oil.

What is hemp oil?

Before talking about hemp oil, it is important to know the plant from which it comes. Hemp, from its Latin name Hemp SATIVA, is a plant native to Central Asia.

For thousands of years, hemp has been cultivated for what it has to offer, notably the stalk, whose fiber is used to produce textiles, paper, and construction materials. However, when it comes to cosmetics, it is the hemp seed (hempseed) that is useful.

It is from this seed and via cold pressing that the precious hemp oil and its multiple benefits are extracted.

What is hemp oil made of?

Hemp oil is particularly rich in :

  • essential fatty acids: omega 3 and 6,
  • linoleic acid,
  • alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E).

Are there any particular contraindications for hemp oil?

When we talk about hemp, cosmetics is far from being the first subject we think about… That’s why it is normal to wonder about the contraindications that hemp oil could have.

Know that the Hemp called “recreational”, of its Latin name Hemp INDICA, is of the same family but remains a very distant cousin of the hemp called “industrial” or “pharmaceutical” presented in this article.

The Hemp Sativa used to produce the hemp oil used in cosmetics does not contain any psychotropic substance (THC). There is therefore no prohibition or contraindication to its use, whether cosmetic or food.

What are the cosmetic benefits of hemp oil?

Like many vegetable oils, one of the benefits of hemp oil is to moisturize and soften the skin and hair, thanks to its high fatty acid content. Classified as a dry oil, it will be highly appreciated by people who prefer non-greasy textures.

Thanks to the presence of omega 3 and vitamin E, hemp oil also has the ability to stimulate blood circulation, which reduces redness and eases couperose.

Hemp oil also has anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help reduce eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

In which cosmetics can I find hemp oil?

You will find hemp oil in many cosmetics: creams and serums, oils, hair products, intimate cleansers, shaving products, make-up removers…
